Prison officer kills trader over cigarette in Kano

An officer of the Nigeria Correctional Service has shot and killed one person and injured another close to Goron Dutse Correctional Centre in Kano.

Eyewitness said the victim was running a business around the correctional facility at Goron Dutse in Kano metropolis when the officer approached him for a cigarette. The request led to misunderstanding.

“We can’t really say with certainty what triggered the killing, but it seems that the officer was owing the trader some money and this time around the trader refused to sell to the officer. This triggered the anger in him and he suddenly shot the trader,” a witness said.

Confirming the incident, Kano Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Abdullahi Kiyawa said the police are still trying to ascertain the identity of the slain trader while the injured is under treatment.
