The newly appointed Federal Commissioner of the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), Desmond Akawor, has resigned from his position as the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State.
Akawor, a former Nigerian ambassador to South Korea, announced his resignation via a letter dated November 22, 2023, and addressed to the acting National Chairman of the PDP, Umar Damagum.
He hinged his resignation on his nomination by President Bola Tinubu as a Federal Commissioner of the RMAFC, representing Rivers State.
Akawor, who thanked Tinubu for the appointment, stated: “After consultation with my leaders and family, I have accepted this opportunity to serve our country, which I consider as a national service.
“Consequently, I have resigned my position as the Rivers State Party Chairman of our great party – The PDP, and immediately handed over all duties to the Deputy Party Chairman – Hon. Aaron Chukwuemeka who has commenced action in this stead.

“I remain committed to the ideals of our party always and will continue to be available to provide, steer, and support for all party affairs whenever l am called upon.”
Akawor has been the Rivers PDP chairman since March 2020, succeeding Felix Obuah.
The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, in a statement on Thursday, said Akawor’s appointment as RMAFC commissioner was pending the confirmation of the Senate.
His appointment followed the demise of the immediate past RMAFC Federal Commissioner from Rivers State, Asondu Temple, earlier this month.
Akawor has served as the Minister of State of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Sole Administrator of the Greater Port Harcourt Development Authority.
He also served as the CEO of the Niger Delta River Basin Development Authority, and Executive Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (Engineering and Technical Services).
