Subsidy removal: NLC begins protest in Lagos

The members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) have commenced a protest over the removal of subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), popularly called petrol, in Lagos State.

The NLC members began the protest at the Ikeja under-bridge in Lagos in the early hours of Wednesday, August 2, 2023.

The union had, last Wednesday, issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to reverse all “anti-poor” and “insensitive” policies.

All efforts by the government to stop the nationwide protest failed.

The NLC President, Joe Ajaero, in a statement, issued on Tuesday, August 1, listed the demands of the union to include the immediate implementation of the resolutions jointly signed with organised Labour and government.

Ajaero also called for the immediate reversal of all anti-poor policies of the government, including the recent hike in petrolprice, school fees, and Value Added Tax (VAT).

He also urged the Federal Government to fix the country’s local refineries in Port Hacourt, Warri, and Kaduna.

The NLC President equally called on the government to release the eight months withheld salaries of university lecturers and workers.
