Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, well known as Sunday Igboho, has been released by the government of Benin Republic.
Igboho’s release was under the agreement that he won’t leave the medical centre or Cotonou for any reason.
Igboho’s counsel, Chief Yomi Alliyu (SAN), confirmed the release in a statement issued in Ibadan on Monday.
“I am to inform you that Chief Sunday Adeyemo, a.k.a Igboho, has been released from prison to his medical practitioners under the agreement that he should not leave the medical centre or Cotonou for any reason.
“Praises should be given to two prominent Yoruba personalities to wit: Prof. Wole Soyinka and Prof. Akintoye for this turn around in our client’s matter,” he said.
The incarceration of Igboho in the Republic of Benin had been extended by six months after spending the initial six months in prison.
Also, the umbrella body of Yoruba self-determination group, Ilana Omo Oodua Worldwide, in a statement, confirmed Igboho’s release from detention.
The statement revealed that Sunday Igboho was released to the leader of Ilana Omo Oodua Worldwide, Prof. Banji Akintoye, and his deputy, Prof. Wale Adeniran.
The statement read: “Yoruba Nation Activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, fondly called Sunday Ighoho, has been released by the Government of Republic of Benin.
“The activist was released on Monday to a Yoruba Leader and Leader of the Umbrella body of Yoruba self-determination group, Ilana Omo Oodua Worldwide, Professor Banji Akintoye, and a French Language Expert/ Deputy Ilana of Ilana Omo Oodua Worldwide, Professor Wale Adeniran.

“Akintoye described the release of Ighoho as a triumph of truth over darkness in Yorubaland.”
It would be recalled that Sunday Igboho was arrested alongside his wife on July 19, 2021, by the International Criminal Police Organisation (INTERPOL) at the Cadjèhoun Airport in Cotonou, the Benin Republic while attempting to flee to Germany.
Sunday Igboho’s wife, Ropo, was later released while the embattled Yoruba Nation activist was returned to the custody of Brigade Criminelle in Cotonou, Benin Republic.
This came after the Beninese court ordered that Sunday Igboho be remanded in a prison facility in the Francophone West African nation while further investigations were carried out on the case against the agitator.
The Yoruba secessionist leader has since been facing allegations bordering on trafficking in arms, inciting violence, and causing disunity in Nigeria.
