Tinubu asks Senate to withdraw Onwudiwe’s nomination as CBN board member

President Bola Tinubu has reportedly asked the Senate to withdraw the nomination of Ruby Onwudiwe as a member of the Board of Directors of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The Star had reported that Tinubu wrote to the Senate for the confirmation of Onwudiwe’s appointment as a board member of the CBN.

The president, in the letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpiabio and read at plenary in Abuja on Wednesday, March 13, 2024, said the confirmation request was in compliance with provisions of section 10, sub-section one of the CBN Establishment Act 2007.

The letter read: “I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate, the appointment of Dr Ruby Onwudiwe as a member of the CBN board of directors.

“The Senate is invited to kindly note that Onwudiwe is a replacement for Mr Kalu Eke, due to the unavailability of Eke for the position.

Tinubu seeks Senate confirmation of Onwudiwe as CBN board member

“It is my hope, therefore, that the Senate will consider and confirm in its usual expeditious manner, the appointment of Onwudiwe.

“Please accept the assurances of my highest regards.”

However, a report by Western Post said Tinubu’s directive for the withdrawal of Onwudiwe’s nomination followed pressure mounted on the president by members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) over her affiliation with the Labour Party (LP).

Onwudiwe had, in a post on her X (formerly Twitter), shown her support for LP in the 2023 presidential election, saying: “It was a landslide victory for Labour Party at my polling unit Lekki polling unit.”

The post was however said to have incited the APC members who protested Onwudiwe’s nomination by Tinubu.

Tinubu was later said to have asked the Senate to step down Onwudiwe’s nomination.
