Tinubu offers board appointment slots to PDP, LP governors

President Bola Tinubu has offered some appointment slots to governors elected on the platform of the oppositions Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP).

The appointments are in the governing boards of agencies, parastatals, institutions, and government-owned companies.

Kwara State Governor and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, made the disclosure at a meeting of the NGF in Abuja on Tuesday, July 11, 2023.

Abdulrazaq, in a communique issued at the end of the meeting, disclosed that Tinubu asked the governors to nominate competent persons to serve on the boards and parastatals of Federal Government agencies which were dissolved in June 2023.

The development left no fewer than 2,000 positions vacant as they are expected to be occupied by new nominees.

Abdulrazaq, however, quoted the NGF members as commending President Tinubu for “showing leadership by extending the opportunity to governors across party lines, by asking them to nominate competent people from their fold for appointment into boards of parastatals.”

Among the agencies dissolved by Tinubu were the North-East Development Commission (NEDC) with 12 vacant board slots; the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) with seven board seats; the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), seven slots; and the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), 21.

Others included the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund, 12; the National Universities Commission, 21; the Transmission Commission of Nigeria, 14; and the National Health Insurance Authority, 12.

Others were the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau, seven; the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, seven; the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, eight; the Nigerian Police Trust Fund, eight; the Nigerian Natural Medicine Development Agency, 10; the Federal Institute of Industrial Research, 11; and the National Centre for Technology Management, 11; among others.
