Users groan as Twitter suffers global outage

Micro blogging site, Twitter, suffered a global outage on Thursday, blocking access to millions of users, as the users reported a variety of glitches, including generic “error” messages and even broken website alerts.

The global outage affected both Twitter’s web version as well as apps.

This comes amidst the platform’s controversial $44 billion takeover deal with Tesla.

Downdetector, which tracks outages across major internet platforms around the world, said it had received millions of reports on Twitter from users by 1:20pm across the globe.

The site, however, appeared to be returning to full function at about 2:04pm.

This was not the first significant downtime for Twitter in 2022.

There were two partial outages in February that limited posting and loading tweets for some people.

This new failure was more substantial as it brought further attention to Twitter’s uncertain future now that Musk is trying to cancel his $44 billion acquisition.

Twitter suffered its longest outage, which it put down to an “internal configuration change,” in 2019 that kept the micro blogging website dark for more than an hour.

Twitter sued Musk before Delaware Chancery Court earlier this week for attempting to terminate his $44 billion takeover proposal.

Musk said last week he was terminating the deal and accused Twitter of hiding the true extent of so-called ‘bot’ accounts on the platform and failing to cooperate with his requests to audit them.
