Yobe wants collaboration with BUK on staff development, research

The Yobe State Government has called for collaboration with Bayero University, Kano, (BUK), in research and the development of staff of its tertiary institutions.

Represented by the Commissioner for Higher Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Mohammed, the Yobe governor, Mai Mala Buni, made the call while donating 100 computers to the university on Wednesday in Kano.

He said the donation of the computers would assist in boosting ICT development in the university’s library, for the benefit of researchers.

“Apart from the donation, let me also use this opportunity to call for collaboration with Bayero University, Kano, on staff development.

“We have the Yobe state University, which is a young and fast growing university, but we have a lot of challenges in terms of staff development. We also have college of education, and polytechnic, with similar challenges.

“I think its high time for the second generation universities to put emphasis on post graduate programmes.

“Once that is done, our staff in the state-owned universities don’t have to go to Egypt, Malaysia, Sudan or other countries for post graduate studies.

“Nigerian universities should have to look at where they have comparative advantage to come and assist other younger universities,” he said.

He also urged the institution to admit more of the state’s indigenes.

Responding, the BUK Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sagir Adamu-Abbas, thanked Buni for the computers and assured of their judicious use.

Adamu-Abbas stated that the university was ready to collaborate with any state, or any university, and that the university would expand its post graduate programmes to enable provision of more support, and collaboration with other universities.

He added that the institution had a section that took care of the needs of physically-challenged persons, and that this was an area the university would also collaborate with Yobe.
